Written for Day 30 of the [livejournal.com profile] 31_days October challenge. The prompt was "give me something"

At first glance, it looked like a crumbled wad of paper lying on the damp grass between graves. Mister Daganfort sucked his teeth in irritation and stumped over, trash-collecting spear held level with his eyes. The spear was useful against more than just discarded soda cans, and so he always carried it in the ready position.

However, when he got close enough to skewer the offending object, he realised it wasn’t crumpled but rather meticulously folded. A complex origami flower, growing out of the ground. Its stem began as a twist of heavy cream-coloured card, but graduated to pale green towards the end. The bloom was paper, but the stem was undeniably organic, and living.

He knelt beside it, his wrinkled hands trembling, making the web of scars across the back of the knuckles dance in the pale winter daylight. He took a deep breath to steady himself, then parted the stiff white petals. There was handwriting inside it, thick black ink that had been protected from the rain by the intricate folds of the paper petals.

“Hello, Euclid,” went the message.

Alone in the Eerie Cemetery, surrounded by graves and the drifting shades of the unhappy dead, Euclid Daganfort swore.
