Written for Day 4 of the [livejournal.com profile] 31_days October challenge. The prompt was "the creak of a door"

The year Marshall leaves for college is one of the worst Simon can remember. It's not just that he has to battle the forces of weirdness by himself, although Halloween is rough, what with the snake-people and the ship of bones and an ancient being made of fire and hunger rising to feast on the flesh of the living.

It's that with Mars gone, he has one less place to escape to, and he hadn't realised how much he'd depended on that sense of refuge until his reason for showing up there packed his bags and left for the bright lights of a university town. He'd gotten used to spending entire weekends in a house where an opening door meant Marilyn Teller standing there in a shabby bathrobe and asking if they had any more laundry, because she was about to put a wash on, or wanting to know if they'd eaten yet, because she was making sandwiches, or wanting to know why they were still up, because it was one in the morning and there absolutely was not a gremlin under the sink, go to bed boys, I mean it.

She was wrong about that one, but Simon had treasured being included in her "they", every time.

Oh, poor Simon! So many emotions perfectly packed into this one. And I love "what with the snake-people and the ship of bones and an ancient being made of fire and hunger rising to feast on the flesh of the living" as an almost throwaway line!
