To whom it may concern

Somebody on the ground floor was screaming. The quartet of Bean Sidhe who lived in Apartment 3 were pretty good about slipping a note under their neighbours’ doors before they started a practice session, so Marshall grabbed the black trash bag that should have gone out days ago and headed downstairs. Before unlocking the barred and warded front door, he paused to fill his pockets with oats, just in case.

The grimy flight of steps that lead to the front door was awash with blood, as was the hard-wearing carpet in non-descript brown that lined the communal corridors. Over by the mail boxes, the walls were streaked with bloody hand-prints. All the ragged red silhouettes were of the left hand, Marshall noted, instinctively slipping his right hand into his jacket pocket.

The door to one of the mail boxes hung slightly ajar, the metal door bent at the top and bottom where it had been pried open. A triple row of neat, even, and extremely sharp teeth ringed the interior of the box, and as Marshall watched, a grey-green tongue slithered out of sight behind them.

Marshall took the trash out and returned to the small fifth floor apartment. He picked up the pale blue wall-mounted phone he’d inherited after his parents remodelled their kitchen and dialled Simon’s extension at the veterinary clinic.

“Hey, it’s me,” he said into the receiver. “The postal service came by. Looks like they fixed the issue with someone stealing our mail.”
